The collection consists chiefly of letters, 1827-1838, from his father Peachy Harrison, discussing family and friends, U.S. and Virginia politics particularly the constitutional convention of 1829. People specifically mentioned include Briscoe G. Giles, William F. Gordon, Chapman Johnson, Benjamin Watkins Leigh, Charles Fenton Mercer, John Randolph, robert Stanard and Littleton Waller Tazewell. Letters, 1833-1838, from Henry Tutwiler discuss his professorship at the University of Alabama, riots there in 1837, and his position at the South Alabama Institute. The collection also contains Harrison's letters to professor Tutwiler at the University of Alabama on family affairs and matters relating to the University of Virginia. The collection also contains a letter from Mary Stuart Harrison Smith to Tutwiler, 1862 April 8, announcing the death of her father. The collection also contains a letter to his mother, 1853 September 6, describing his repugnance for the office of Chairman of the Faculty together with a typed copy of an obituary of Peachy Harrison. Additional correspondents include Harrison's wife Eliza Lewis Carter Tucker Harrison, his sister mary Jane harrison, George H. Gilmer, Robert M. T. Hunter, W. H. Hammet, Edward S. Joynes (who discusses studies at the University of Berlin), william Cabell Rives and Henry Tucker. With the collection are a pitcher, two goblets and a tray "Presented to Dr. Gessner Harrison by the students of the University of Virginia session 1858 & 9 as a memorial of their high regard and esteem." The collection also includes a framed portrait of Harrison by Lelia Smith Cocke after the original by L.M.D. Guillaume. The collection also contains Greek, Latin, and chemistry notebooks.
